Post workout protein recommendation?
Help pls

I'm pretty new to weights. A friend said I should get a post workout protein. Should I? And most importantly, which one should I take?

Basically it's up to you if you want to get one bro. If your diet can provide you with enough protein, there would not be a need for protein supplementation. One serving of whey protein will give you roughly 24 gram protein and 1 gram carbohydrate whereas a tall glass of low fat milk can give you up to 18gram protein and 30+ gram carbohydrates which are important for you to take in to replenish muscle carbohydrate stores after a workout. So in other words, low-fat milk is a wiser choice as it gives you both protein and carbs. The ONLY difference is that whey protein digests and is absorbed faster by the body. I think you should really get a protein drink. It's not that expensive nowadays and the quick protein replenishment would really help prevent catabolism (burning of muscle).

Milk is probably too slow and it's pretty "heavy" and if you're lactose intolerant, then that's worse.

 

I've been taking this for a long time, and it's pretty good cause it's all protein isolates, which is a higher grade protein than protein concentrates, which are in most other powders.

Well I gotta agree with wildcat as well.. He's got a point too.  In terms of convenience and cost I would say whey protein is cheaper than milk. The thing to keep in mind is do not depend on protein supplementation alone for your daily protein needs.  Cheers :)

You guys might be missing the real point of the question. The issue is that alot of people actually think protein supplements are medicines or unnatural chemicals that make your muscles grow. Some don't even know that protein is just a normal nutrient found in normal foods. That is why they often ask about it and the side effects etc. I think we should explain what it really is first.

A protein supplement is actually nothing more than milk, with all the fats, carbs, sugars, lactose and other unnecessary stuff removed. Some kinds have soy or egg proteins added. Ultimately they are made using natural foods. The only use of a protein supplement is to make it convenient to consume a larger amount of protein in a smaller serving size. In comparison, 1 scoop of protein powder contains as much protein as 6 whole eggs, 100 grams of chicken or 200 grams of fish. It is definitely much easier to mix the powder in a shaker and gulping it down as compared cooking and eating meat. After a workout, you want your protein fast, and the most convenient means is a protein shake. Also meat takes a longer time to be broken down as compared to a protein powder. Milk is out of the question for post workout, it breaks down too slowly and the amount of protein you get from it is pretty limited. You drink too much and you might get diarrhea.

For a post workout shake, I would go for a protein shake with 30 grams or more simple carbs added. Without the carbs, the protein will end up be oxidized for energy instead of being used for muscle recovery. A post workout shake or other supplements, although usually the most talked about, play a very minor role when it comes to seeing results. Ideally, one should find out his body's requirements for the various macronutrients, micronutrients and calorie intake and follow a diet that meets these requirements. Thats how you get results.
